Understanding Payer's Discretion in Reporting

In addition to the payments you receive via VGCM, your payer can choose to include the following transaction types:

  • Off-Platform Payments
Example: If you received payment for a project via a direct bank transfer outside of Wingspan, the payer decides whether this gets included on your 1099-NEC.

  • Card Processing Fees
Example: Fees deducted for a payment you received via a credit card transaction can be reported, depending on the payer's choice.

  • Reimbursable Expenses
Example: You bought supplies for a project and were reimbursed by your client. This reimbursement may or may not be included in your 1099-NEC, based on the payer's decision.

Tips for Deducting Reimbursable Expenses

  • Deductible on Schedule C: If these expenses are reported on your 1099-NEC, remember you can deduct them on your Schedule C.

  • Record-Keeping is Key: Maintain detailed records of these expenses for accurate reporting and deduction claims.

Contact Your Payer

Your payer ultimately decides what types of payments are included in the Non-Employee Compensation Amount field on your 1099-NEC.

For questions about why a specific transaction was included in your 1099-NEC, you will need to contact your payer directly.

Reported Amount FAQs

Why aren't my Tax Withholdings reported on my 1099-NEC?

The 1099-NEC form is used to report non-employee compensation paid to independent contractors or freelancers, and it does not include any tax withholding information.

As an independent contractor, you are considered self-employed. This means that you are responsible for paying your own income taxes, as well as self-employment taxes. Your payments do not have any payroll taxes withheld by your payer or Wingspan, and it's your responsibility to pay taxes on the non-employee compensation shown on your 1099-NEC.

Wingspan offers an optional tax withholding feature to assist you in setting aside a percentage of your payments to pay for quarterly estimated federal taxes. It is at your sole discretion to maintain the balance of the tax withholding account so you can make tax payments, deposits, or withdrawals as needed. Therefore, it is your responsibility to maintain proper records of your tax payments to assist with your annual tax filing.
